Word on the street that infamous social housing building on Vancouver’s Granville Street is gonna shut down in June 20262. 원래 호텔이었는데, 코로나 때 사회 주택으로 바뀐 곳이거든.
This spot used to be a hotel but then it got flipped into social housing during the COVID-19 pandemic3. 근데 주변 상인들이랑 밴쿠버 시장이 “여기 때문에 동네 분위기 이상해진다”, “범죄랑 사건사고가 끊이질 않는다”면서 계속 민원을 넣었나 봐.
Local shop owners and the Vancouver mayor were constantly complaining saying, “This place is making the neighborhood super sketchy,” and “It’s a non-stop drama fest of crime and incidents.”4. 결국 폐쇄 결정이 난 거지.
Well, it finally got the axe.5. 문제는 거기 살던 주민들인데, 갑자기 집을 비우라니 완전 멘붕 상태야.
The thing is the residents living there are totally freaking out because they're suddenly being told to clear out6. 특히 밴쿠버의 다른 사회 주택 밀집 지역인 다운타운 이스트사이드로 가게 될까 봐 걱정이 이만저만이 아니래.
They're seriously freaking out especially about getting dumped in Downtown Eastside which is already a social housing hotspot in Vancouver.7. 안 그래도 힘든 사람들인데 더 힘들어지게 생긴 거지.
These folks are already struggling and now they're gonna have an even tougher time.8. 근데 이 폐쇄 시점이 좀 묘하지 않아?
The timing of this shutdown though kinda fishy right?9. 하필 2026년 월드컵 직전이거든.
Talk about timing it's right before the 2026 World Cup10. 그래서 주민들은 “이거 다 월드컵 때문에 도시 이미지 관리하려고 우리 쫓아내는 거 아니냐”면서 킹리적 의심을 하고 있어.
So the residents are like 'Are they just kicking us out for the World Cup to clean up the city's image?' and they're totally sus about it.11. 한 주민은 “피파 때문에 이러는 거 다 안다”고 인터뷰에서 팩폭을 날리기도 했어.
One resident even dropped a truth bomb in an interview saying, “We all know this is because of FIFA.”12. 물론 시 정부는 “피파랑은 전혀 관련 없다”고 선을 긋고 있지만, 글쎄… 과연 그럴까?
Sure, the city government is all like, “Nah, totally not about FIFA,” but c'mon, who's actually buying that?13. 아무튼 그랜빌의 밤거리를 즐기는 사람들 뒤에는 이렇게 하루아침에 집을 잃을 위기에 처한 사람들이 있다는 거, 좀 씁쓸한 현실이네.
Anyway while people are out there enjoying Granville's nightlife there are folks behind the scenes who are about to lose their homes overnight That's a pretty bitter pill to swallow, for real.
