Six female officers in BC filed a class-action lawsuit against 13 police departments over harassment and discrimination, and the appeal is currently underway.
2. 원래 1심 법원에서는 이 문제를 법원이 아니라 노동조합 중재(노조가 개입해서 분쟁을 해결하는 절차)로 해결하라고 판결했거든.
The lower court basically told them to handle it through union arbitration instead of taking it to trial
3. 근데 여경들 입장에서는 그게 말이 안 된다는 거지.
But from the female officers’ perspective that just doesn't make any sense
4. 노조 간부들이 대부분 남성인데다가, 노조에 불만을 제기하면 오히려 ‘요주의 인물’로 찍혀서 불이익을 받는 구조라는 거야.
With the union leadership being mostly male raising a grievance just gets you red-flagged and screwed over by the system.
5. 시스템적인 차별과 괴롭힘을 노조나 내부 기관에서 알아서 해결하라는 건 그냥 책임을 떠넘기는 것밖에 안 된다고 꼬집었어.
They called it out, saying that fixing systemic discrimination and harassment internally is basically just passing the buck

7. 원치 않는 신체 접촉이나 성적인 농담은 기본이고, 직장에 남성 성기 그림을 붙여놓거나 여경을 성적으로 비하하는 발언을 일삼았대.
They dealt with unwanted touching and dirty jokes on the regular, plus they even put up gross drawings and kept trashing female cops with sexist comments.
8. 심지어 3년 전 밴쿠버 경찰서에서는 성폭행 용의자 DNA 채취 관련해서 여경들 얼굴을 합성한 조롱성 포스터를 무려 12일이나 걸어놨었다고 해.
Get this, three years ago at the VPD, they actually put up a nasty mock-up poster with female officers’ faces for a full twelve days.
9. 이런 피해를 입고도 목소리를 냈다가 엄청난 보복을 당하거나 아예 경찰을 그만둔 여성들이 한둘이 아니라고 하네.
It’s not just one or two women who spoke up and faced major blowback or just quit the force altogether
10. 재판 과정에서 판사 중 한 명도 “노조가 억압적이라면 단체 협약이 있다고 해서 피해자들이 덜 취약해지는 건 아니다”라고 공감하는 듯한 말을 했대.
During the hearing, one judge basically said victims aren’t any less vulnerable just because there’s a union contract if the union itself is toxic
11. 최종 판결은 나중에 나올 예정인데, 과연 법원이 어떤 결정을 내릴지 지켜봐야 할 것 같아.
