3. 밴쿠버 시청에서 이 주차장 자리에 22층짜리 오피스 건물을 짓겠다는 계획을 승인해 줬거든.
The City of Vancouver finally gave the green light for a 22-story office tower on that parking lot site.
4. 근데 쿨하게 오케이한 건 아니고, 조건부 승인이라는 딱지를 붙였어.
But it wasn't a clean green light they slapped on a conditional approval
5. 원래 개발사에서 가져온 조감도는 아래는 좁고 위로 갈수록 뚱뚱해지는 약간 가분수 같은 스타일이었단 말이야.
The developer’s original design was basically top-heavy starting narrow at the bottom and getting bulkier at the top
6. 근데 시청 사람들이 보기엔 너무 부담스러웠나 봐.
But I guess it was a bit too much for the folks at City Hall
7. “건물이 너무 빵빵하니까 다이어트 좀 시켜라” 하면서 가장 넓은 부분의 면적을 3분의 1 정도 싹둑 잘라내고 슬림하게 다시 설계하라고 지시했어.
They said the building was way too thicc and definitely needed to go on a diet ordering a third of the widest part to be chopped off for a sleeker redesign
8. 한마디로 강제 다이어트 당한 셈이지.

9. 이 땅의 주인인 캐딜락 페어뷰(대형 부동산 개발 회사)는 지난 25년 동안 여기에 뭐라도 지어보려고 진짜 눈물겨운 똥꼬쇼를 해왔어.
The landowner, Cadillac Fairview, has been jumping through hoops for twenty-five years to build something on this spot
10. 2015년에는 미래지향적이랍시고 건물을 디자인했다가 사람들한테 “무슨 얼음송곳이냐”고 폭풍 까이고 취소된 적도 있거든.
Back in 2015, they tried to go for a futuristic vibe, but everyone roasted the design for looking like an ice pick, so the whole plan got axed.
11. 그래서 이번엔 밴쿠버의 네임드 건축가 제임스 청(James Cheng)을 모셔와서 단풍나무에 영감을 받은 야심 찬 디자인을 들이밀었는데, 결국 또 수정을 거치게 됐네.
So they brought in Vancouver's big-shot architect James Cheng with an ambitious, maple-inspired design, but it ended up needing some tweaks again.
12. 이 와중에 전직 도시계획가나 전문가들은 딴지를 걸고 있어.

13. 밴쿠버 워터프런트 구역 전체를 어떻게 개발할지 큼직한 마스터플랜도 아직 없는데, 건물 하나만 덜컥 승인해주면 나중에 스텝 꼬인다는 거지.
Without a master plan for the whole Waterfront area approving just one building is bound to mess things up later
14. 하지만 우리 건축가 형님은 “그놈의 마스터플랜 기다리다가는 평생 주차장만 봐야 한다”면서 속 시원하게 팩폭을 날렸어.
But our architect dropped a truth bomb, saying we’d be staring at a parking lot forever waiting for that master plan.
15. 사실 워터프런트 엑스포 86 이후로 그 동네에 뭐 하나 제대로 지어진 게 없긴 하거든.
To be honest, nothing much has really been built around there since Expo 86 at Waterfront.
16. 어쨌든 까다로운 시청에서 그린라이트를 켜줬다는 거 자체가 개발사 입장에서는 완전 축제 분위기야.

18. 맨날 자갈밭이랑 기찻길만 보이던 칙칙한 주차장 뷰가 드디어 세련된 빌딩으로 바뀔 날이 머지않은 거 같아.
