1. 지난 금요일 밴쿠버 웨스트엔드(West End, 밴쿠버 다운타운 서쪽에 위치한 주거 지역)에서 정말 안타까운 차량 돌진 사건이 일어났어.

2. 이 사건 때문에 길에서 전동 스쿠터를 타고 가시던 노인분이 크게 다치셔서 병원에 입원하셨다고 해.
Word has it that an elderly man on an e-scooter was seriously hurt in the crash and ended up in the hospital
3. 가해자는 BC주와 서스캐처원주(Saskatchewan) 등지에서 이미 경찰과 수없이 얽힌 전과가 아주 화려한 34살의 테드 발리라는 사람이야.
The culprit is 34-year-old Ted Varley, who’s got a massive rap sheet and plenty of run-ins with the cops across BC and Saskatchewan.
4. 이 사람은 현재 위험 운전으로 인한 상해 혐의 등 4가지 무거운 죄목으로 기소돼서 구치소에 갇혀 있는 상태야.
This guy’s currently sitting in jail facing four serious charges including dangerous driving causing bodily harm
5. 사건은 5월 15일 새벽 5시 30분쯤 코목스(Comox)와 브로튼(Broughton) 거리 근처에서 시작됐어.
The whole thing kicked off at about 5:30 in the morning on May 15th near Comox and Broughton streets
6. 이 운전자가 차를 몰고 넬슨 파크(Nelson Park) 안에 있는 목줄 없는 반려견 공원 구역을 무자비하게 가로질러 돌진하다가 결국 전동 스쿠터를 타던 어르신을 치고 말았다고 해.
So this driver plowed right through the off-leash dog park in Nelson Park and ended up hitting a senior on an electric scooter.
7. 정말 다행히도 스쿠터에 타고 계시던 어르신은 위독한 고비는 넘기셨지만, 여전히 심각한 상태라서 병원에서 계속 치료를 받고 계신 상황이야.
Luckily, the senior on the scooter is out of the woods now, but he’s still in serious condition and getting treated at the hospital.
8. 가해 차량은 사고를 내고도 도망치려다 결국 경찰차를 강하게 들이받고 나서야 멈춰 섰고, 그 과정에서 경찰관 두 명도 부상을 입었어.
The car tried to flee the scene after the crash, but finally stopped only after slamming into a police cruiser, injuring two officers in the process.
9. 그중 한 명은 이제 막 출근한 지 이틀밖에 안 된 신입 경찰관이었다고 해서 안타까움을 더하고 있네.
It’s even more heartbreaking because one of them was a rookie cop who was only two days into the job
10. 그래도 경찰관 두 분은 다행히 금요일 늦게 퇴원하셨다고 해.
Thankfully, both of the officers were released from the hospital late Friday
11. 아직 정확한 범행 동기가 무엇인지는 속 시원하게 밝혀지지 않았어.

12. 다만 경찰은 정신 건강 문제나 마약 투약과 관련이 깊을 수 있다고 보고 집중적으로 조사 중이야.
