1. 메이플 리지(밴쿠버 근교 도시) 쪽에 어제 밤부터 산불이 났는데 이게 지금 통제 불능 상태로 번지고 있대.
A wildfire broke out in Maple Ridge last night and it’s spreading out of control right now
2. 소방서에서 출동해서 확인해 보니까 크기가 한 1.5헥타르(축구장 두 개 정도) 정도 되는데, 자연 발생도 아니고 사람 실수로 불이 난 것 같다는 킹리적 갓심이 들고 있어.
The fire department responded and found it’s about 1.5 hectares, which is like two football fields, and there’s a strong suspicion it was human-caused rather than natural.
3. 하필이면 산세도 엄청 가파르고 험한 곳이라 소방대원들이 진화 작업하는데 애를 많이 먹고 있나 봐.
The terrain there is crazy steep and rugged making it a real struggle for the firefighters to put out the fire
4. 그래도 다행인 건 아직까지 대피령이나 경보 같은 건 안 울렸어.
The good thing is that no evacuation orders or alerts have been issued yet.
5. 통제 불능이라고 하니까 쫄릴 수 있는데, 그냥 당장 불길이 잡히지 않아서 계속 퍼질 수도 있다는 뜻이래.
Hearing it’s out of control might freak you out, but it just means the fire isn’t contained yet and could keep spreading.
6. 시청에서는 근처에 연기가 많이 날 수 있으니까 창문이랑 문 꽉 닫아두고 웬만하면 그 근처로는 얼씬도 하지 말라고 당부하더라고.

7. 지금 소방대원 25명이나 투입돼서 진짜 땀 뻘뻘 흘리면서 불 끄고 있고, 다행히 날씨도 진화 작업하기에 좋은 편이라고 해.
Right now, 25 firefighters are out there working up a sweat to kill the flames and luckily, the weather is cooperating with the firefighting efforts
8. 민가 쪽으로 번질 위험도 없고 다친 사람도 1도 없으니까 근처 사는 사람들은 일단 안심해도 될 것 같아.
Since there's no risk of spreading to homes and zero injuries have been reported, folks nearby can breathe a sigh of relief at least for the time being.
9. 참고로 지금 BC주(브리티시 컬럼비아 주) 전체에 타고 있는 산불이 24개나 되는데, 통제 안 되는 건 이 메이플 리지 산불 딱 하나뿐이래.
Just so you know, there are 24 wildfires active across BC right now, and the Maple Ridge fire is the only one running wild.
10. 이번 주말에 날씨가 꽤 선선해질 거라고 하니까 다행이긴 한데, 남부 지방이나 내륙 쪽은 비가 너무 안 와서 여전히 산불 위험이 높다고 하니까 산에 갈 일 있으면 진짜 불조심하자.
