2. 18살 먹은 밴쿠버 대학생이 총대를 멨는데, 무려 500명 넘는 사람들이 모여서 워터프론트 역부터 그랜빌 아일랜드까지 쭉 행진을 했지 뭐야.

3. 이 사람들이 시위하는 이유가 뭐냐면, 캐나다 연방정부가 밴쿠버 시내랑 마운트 플레전트 쪽에 엄청 거대한 AI 데이터센터(인공지능 서버를 모아둔 거대한 시설)를 짓겠다고 발표했거든.

4. 근데 다들 알다시피 지금 밴쿠버가 집값도 미쳤고 물 부족 문제도 심각하잖아.
But as we all know, right now housing prices in Vancouver are absolutely insane and we're also facing a serious water shortage
5. 근데 이 AI 데이터센터라는 녀석이 전기랑 물을 하마처럼 빨아들이는 괴물이란 말이지.
But the thing is, these AI data centers are total resource hogs that guzzle electricity and water like crazy.
6. 그래서 시위대는 “머리 좀 써라(Use your brain)”라고 외치면서 데이터센터 확장 계획을 당장 취소하라고 목소리를 높이고 있어.
So the protesters are shouting “Get a clue!” while calling for the government to scrap the data center expansion plans immediately.
7. 물론 정부랑 통신사 텔러스(Telus) 쪽에서는 “이거 엄청 친환경적이고 지속 가능한 방식이야”라고 쉴드를 치고 있긴 해.
Sure, the government and Telus are defending it, claiming it’s a super eco-friendly and sustainable approach.
8. 물이랑 전기 사용량도 획기적으로 줄이는 쿨링 시스템을 쓰고, 여기서 나오는 폐열을 모아서 메트로 밴쿠버에 있는 15만 가구 난방에 쓴다나 뭐라나.
They’re rolling out a cooling system that slashes water and power usage, claiming they’ll recycle the waste heat to warm up 150,000 Vancouver homes or something like that.
9. 게다가 이거 지으면 경제 효과가 9조 원이고 일자리도 쏟아진다고 홍보 중이야.
Plus, they’re hyping it up by saying it’ll pump 9 billion dollars into the economy and create a boatload of jobs.
10. 하지만 시위를 주도한 대학생 형님은 “집도 없고 물도 없는데 AI가 웬 말이냐, 킹받네”라며 절대 물러서지 않고 있어.
But the student leading the charge isn’t budging, saying, ‘No housing, no water, so why AI? I’m totally losing it.
11. BC주 녹색당 대표도 환경이랑 안전 문제 확실해질 때까지 일단 스탑하라고 거들었지.
The leader of the BC Greens also chimed in, calling for a pause until environmental and safety concerns are officially cleared up and fully addressed.
12. 처음엔 그냥 SNS에 올린 포스터 한 장이었는데, 지금은 서명운동에 3,500명 넘게 참여할 정도로 판이 커졌어.
