I heard that 13-story building from 1966 on Vancouver's Hastings Street is getting a complete makeover into 180 hotel rooms, while the 4-story building from 1949 on Victoria's Blanshard Street will be reborn as 126 rooms.

So they're converting them into high-demand hotels for now to rake in some good cash and maybe redevelop them into high-rises in fifteen or twenty years depending on how things look, they're totally playing the long game.
