1. 캐나다 BC주 크랜브룩에서 좀 심각하고 안타까운 일이 하나 터졌어.
Something pretty serious and heartbreaking went down in Cranbrook, BC
2. 무기를 들고 있다가 경찰한테 잡혀간 사람이 유치장에서 쓰러진 뒤에 결국 사망하는 사건이 발생했거든.
This guy got busted with a weapon, collapsed in a jail cell, and ended up dying.
3. 사건의 발단은 6월 27일이었어.
This whole thing kicked off on June 27th
4. 브라이어 애비뉴랑 5번가 교차로 근처에 있는 어떤 건물 지붕 위에 무기를 든 남자가 있다는 신고가 들어왔지.
So a call came in about an armed guy on some building's roof near Brier Avenue and 5th.
5. 출동한 경찰이 주변을 싹 통제한 다음에 그 남자를 체포해서 지역 RCMP (캐나다 연방경찰) 유치장으로 데려갔대.
The responding cops locked down the area, arrested the guy, and hauled him off to the local RCMP holding cells.
6. 그런데 다음 날 낮 12시가 조금 지났을 때, 이 남자가 갑자기 건강에 심각한 이상이 생겨서 쓰러진 거야.
But just past noon the next day, this guy suddenly had a major medical emergency and ended up collapsing.
7. 경찰들이 응급처치를 하고 소방관이랑 구급대원들까지 급하게 와서 위독한 상태로 병원에 옮겼지만, 참 안타깝게도 6월 30일에 병원에서 숨을 거두고 말았어.
The cops gave him first aid, and firefighters and paramedics rushed him to the hospital in critical condition, but sadly, he passed away on June 30th.
8. 지금 이 사건 때문에 IIO (BC주 경찰의 무력 사용이나 사망 사건을 조사하는 독립조사소)가 투입돼서 본격적인 조사를 시작했어.
So because of this incident, the IIO, BC’s police watchdog, stepped in and launched a full-blown investigation.
9. 이 남자가 사망한 이유가 경찰이 어떤 물리력을 행사했기 때문인지, 아니면 제때 응급 조치를 안 해서 벌어진 방관 때문인지 아주 꼼꼼히 따져본다는 거지.
They're digging deep into whether he died because the cops got physically rough or because they failed to give him medical help in time
10. 조사 결과 만약 경찰 쪽에 조금이라도 책임이 있다고 판단되면, 민간 책임자가 경찰의 범죄 혐의가 성립하는지 결정하게 될 거래.
If the investigation finds the cops to be even slightly responsible a civilian director will decide if they should face criminal charges
11. 현재 IIO에서 당시 사건을 목격했거나 영상을 찍은 사람들의 제보를 간절히 기다리고 있다고 하니까, 혹시 주변에 아는 사람 있으면 제보하라고 알려줘.

It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth because a human life is on the line
