1. 금요일 오후에 뉴웨스트민스터(New Westminster)에 있는 한 아파트에서 엄청 큰 불이 났어.

2. 오후 1시 반쯤 4번가에 있는 파인크레스트 매너(Pinecrest Manor)라는 아파트에서 화재가 시작됐는데, 상황이 너무 심각해서 인근 도로까지 싹 통제됐대.
A fire broke out around 1:30 PM at the Pinecrest Manor apartments on 4th Avenue, and it got so bad that all the nearby streets were completely blocked off.
3. 처음엔 소방관들이 1단계 화재(지역 소방서 인력만 출동하는 초기 화재)인 줄 알고 출동했는데, 막상 도착해 보니까 불길이 순식간에 번져서 3단계 화재(인근 여러 소방서의 지원 인력과 장비가 총동원되는 대규모 화재)로 커져버렸어.
At first, firefighters rolled up thinking it was just a one-alarm fire, but once they got there, the flames spread in a flash and quickly escalated to a three-alarm fire.
4. 그래서 결국 버너비(Burnaby) 소방서 인력까지 다급하게 지원을 와야 했지.
So in the end, the Burnaby fire department had to rush over to back them up
5. 건물에 불이 번지면서 빠져나가지 못하고 발코니로 피신한 사람들이 꽤 있었나 봐.
It looks like quite a few people got trapped and had to flee to their balconies as the fire spread
6. 소방관들이 도착하자마자 바로 구조 모드로 전환해서 사람들을 먼저 구출해야 했어.
As soon as the firefighters arrived they had to switch straight into rescue mode to get people out first
7. 그 다음에 건물 안으로 들어가서 불을 끄려고 했는데, 내부 상황이 너무 악화돼서 결국 뒤로 물러나 방어적으로 진압할 수밖에 없었대.
They tried to go inside to put out the fire but things got so bad they had to back off and fight it defensively
8. 안타깝게도 이 과정에서 아파트 주민 한 명이랑 뉴웨스트민스터 소방관 두 명이 다쳐서 병원으로 이송됐어.
Sadly, in the middle of all this, one tenant and two New Westminster firefighters got hurt and ended up in the hospital.
9. 다행히 상태는 안정적이라고 하네.
Thankfully, they are in stable condition.
10. 구급차도 여러 대 출동해서 현장에서 네 명을 치료했고, 그중 세 명이 병원으로 갔대.
A bunch of ambulances rushed over treating four people on-site and three of them went to the hospital
11. 가장 마음 아픈 건 이 불로 무려 50가구 주민들이 하루아침에 보금자리를 잃었다는 거야.
The most heartbreaking part is that this fire left as many as 50 families homeless overnight
12. 맞은편에 사는 어떤 주민이 오갈 데 없어진 사람들을 돕기 위해 고펀드미(GoFundMe - 주로 개인적인 사연이나 재난 피해를 돕기 위해 사용하는 온라인 모금 플랫폼) 캠페인도 시작했어.
A neighbor living across the street started a GoFundMe campaign to help those left with nowhere to go
13. 이웃들은 센추리 하우스(Century House - 지역 커뮤니티 센터)로 안내받아서 이틀 치 긴급 숙소랑 바우처를 받았다고 하는데, 당장 집이랑 소중한 물건들을 다 잃어버린 가족들 심정이 어떨지 상상조차 안 되네.
The neighbors were sent to Century House for a couple of days of emergency housing and vouchers, but I can't even fathom what those families are going through losing their homes and prized possessions in the blink of an eye
14. 소방 당국은 안전이 확보되는 대로 정확한 화재 원인을 조사할 예정이야.
The fire department is gonna look into exactly what caused the fire as soon as it’s safe
