1. 밴쿠버 트라웃 레이크(Trout Lake, 이스트 밴쿠버에 있는 힐링 명소인 호수 공원)에서 북쪽 산맥을 바라보는 끝내주는 뷰를 꽉 막아버릴지도 모르는 26층짜리 주상복합 아파트 건설 건 때문에 밴쿠버 시의회가 엄청 시끄러워.

2. 원래 지난 2월에 시의회에서 이 동네의 소중한 경치를 보호하는 이른바 뷰 콘(View Cone, 랜드마크나 자연경관을 가리지 않게 건물의 높이와 형태를 제한하는 건축 규제)을 지키기로 땅땅 결정을 내렸거든.
So back in February, city council straight up decided to lock in the so-called View Cone rule basically a building code that caps how tall and wide so it doesn't block the landmark or view all to protect this neighborhood's precious scenery
3. 그런데 개발사들이 나타나서 서민들을 위한 임대 주택도 넉넉하게 짓고 1층엔 상가도 빵빵하게 넣어야 한다면서, 원래 제한 높이인 10.7미터 대신 무려 83미터까지 훌쩍 올려서 지을 수 있게 특별히 예외로 해달라고 조르고 있어.
But then the developers rolled in claiming they need to pack in a bunch of affordable rental units and load up the ground floor with shops so now they're begging for a special exception to jack the height limit from 10.7 meters all the way up to a whopping 83 meters
4. 게다가 최근에 BC주에서 스카이트레인(밴쿠버 전역을 잇는 지상철) 역 근처에는 무조건 20층 이상 팍팍 지어 올리라는 법을 새로 만들었는데, 개발사들은 이걸 아주 훌륭한 방패막이로 삼아서 밀어붙이고 있지.
On top of that, BC just passed a new law saying you gotta build at least 20 stories near SkyTrain stations no matter what, and developers are totally using that as the perfect shield to push this whole thing through.
5. 하지만 동네 주민들 입장에서는 정말 속이 타들어 가는 상황이야.
But for the folks who live there this is honestly eating them alive
6. 제리코 해변이나 콜 하버처럼 탁 트인 뷰가 없는 이스트 밴쿠버에서는 트라웃 레이크가 유일하게 맑은 물과 멋진 산 경치를 보며 숨통을 틔울 수 있는 곳이거든.
Since East Vancouver doesn't have those wide-open views like Jericho Beach or Coal Harbour, Trout Lake is basically the only place where you can catch a breather with clear water and gorgeous mountain views.
7. 게다가 한 번 예외를 인정해서 산 뷰를 가려버리기 시작하면, 앞으로 다른 개발사들도 너도나도 규정을 무시하고 여기저기 고층 건물을 올려댈 거라며 아주 뼈 때리는 걱정을 하고 있어.
Plus, they're seriously worried that once you let this one slide and block the mountain view every other developer out there is gonna say screw the rules and slap up high-rises all over the place
8. 시장이나 일부 시의원들은 주택난을 해결하려면 옛날 낡은 규제들은 확 갈아엎어야 한다고 주장하는 중이라, 경치를 지킬지 집을 더 지을지 고민이 참 깊네.
The mayor and some city councillors are arguing that we've gotta tear up these old outdated rules to fix the housing crunch so it's a real tough call between saving the view and building more homes
