A developer named Wesgroup pitched a revised proposal to Vancouver City Council to flatten this place and rebuild the complex completely from scratch.
3. 근데 이게 완전 뒤통수 치는 격이라 세입자들이 단단히 뿔이 났지.
But this was a complete slap in the face, so the tenants were totally pissed off.
4. 원래 2022년에 통과된 첫 계획안에는 저렴한 임대주택(Below-market rental housing: 주변 시세보다 싸게 공급되는 공공성 임대주택) 25가구랑 어린이집이 있었단 말이지.
The original plan approved back in 2022 included 25 below-market rental homes along with an on-site daycare facility
5. 근데 건설사가 요즘 시장 상황이 헬이라 수지타산이 안 맞는다며 태세를 전환했어.
But the developer did a total 180, claiming the market is absolute hell and the numbers just don't add up.
6. 임대주택이랑 어린이집은 다 빼버리고, 분양 아파트 대신 4가구씩 지을 수 있는 단독 필지(fee-simple lots: 개별적으로 사고팔 수 있는 땅) 19개로 쪼개 팔겠다는 거야.
They ditched the affordable housing and daycare, and instead of building condos, they want to chop it up into nineteen fee-simple lots for fourplexes.
7. 진짜 킹받는 건 시청 직원들의 쿨한 반응이야.
What really pisses me off is how chill the city staff are.
8. 이 지역 개발 규정(Cambie corridor plan: 캠비 거리 일대 개발 지침)상 새 임대 면적의 25%는 저렴한 주택이어야 하거든?
Under the Cambie Corridor Plan, 25 percent of the new rental space is supposed to be affordable housing, you know?
9. 근데 시청 애들이 규정 미달인데도 낡은 건물 부수고 어쨌든 새 임대 90개 정도 지어주니 그냥 허가해주자고 시의회에 추천해버렸어.
But city staff recommended council approve it anyway, cause tearing down the old place gives us about ninety new rentals despite falling short.
10. 세입자들은 지금 4년째 언제 쫓겨날지 모르는 림보(limbo: 오도가도 못하고 방치된 상태) 상태야.
The tenants have been stuck in limbo for four years now, never knowing when they will get kicked out.
11. 시의 세입자 보호 대상에 못 껴서 보상도 못 받는 사람도 수두룩해.
A ton of tenants don't qualify for city tenant protections and get zero compensation.
12. 건설사가 이사비는 챙겨준다고 생색냈지만, 저소득층 어르신이나 장애인들은 당장 쫓겨나면 밴쿠버의 사악한 월세를 감당할 길이 없어 밤잠을 설치고 있어.
The developer made a big show of covering their moving expenses, but low-income seniors and disabled folks are losing sleep over getting evicted, knowing they can't afford Vancouver's insane rent.
