The folks at the center of this drama are Iona Bonamis from OneCity Vancouver and Lenny Zhou from ABC Vancouver.

These two originally signed up to run with both English and Chinese names, but Vancouver’s election chief dragged them to court, claiming that is not what they go by.

The wild thing is that a candidate who registered under the nickname Rollergirl actually got the green light this election.

Bonamis is completely dumbfounded, wondering why she can’t use her real name that her parents gave her and she’s used her whole life.

8. 게다가 밴쿠버시 웹사이트에 등록된 후보 123명 중 7명은 이미 한자 이름을 썼고, 그중 4명은 무사통과됐어.
Plus, out of 123 candidates listed on the city website, seven already used Chinese names, and four of them got a free pass.

Zhou is also feeling pretty bitter that the name he’s used his whole life won’t even make the ballot.

Actually, the exact same thing went to court back during the 2022 election, but the judge put off the decision, so Chinese names ended up on the ballot.
12. 반면에 옆 동네 리치먼드시는 자동 개표 소프트웨어(투표지를 읽어내는 기계 장치)를 위해 영어 이름만 같이 쓰면 한자든 뭐든 다 오케이(OK)라며 쿨하게 허용하고 있어.
On the flip side, neighboring Richmond is totally cool with letting candidates use Chinese characters or whatever they want, as long as they include an English name for the automated vote-counting software.
