The NDP just played the snap election card totally out of the blue.
So with a fire under their butts, the top brass from the Conservatives and CentreBC put their heads together in an emergency meeting at a Richmond hotel until 1 a.m.
Asked if the two parties would reunite, Lorne Doerkson, the interim Conservative leader, sent out a super positive signal, saying that the odds are pretty solid and they are busting their butts overnight to make it happen.
From the looks of things, CentreBC leader Peter Milobar and most of the eight breakaway MLAs are setting the stage to return to the Conservative fold.
CentreBC president Mike Wignall felt pretty bitter after hearing the news, saying, “Honestly, it’s kind of a bummer.”
But not everybody walked away with a happy ending.
Elenore Sturko, the Surrey-Cloverdale MLA, decided to just stay put.
She said walking away from the party wasn’t just about beefing with the former leader
She firmly put her foot down, saying she can never go back, because the party is drifting way too far-right and totally losing its mind.
In a totally wild soap opera twist, even the former leader’s husband, Brent Chapman, got pissed over party attacks against his wife, so he dumped the Conservatives and jumped ship to OneBC, started by another ousted lawmaker.
Meanwhile, experts are roasting Premier David Eby for suddenly calling a snap election two whole years early.
Critics say calling an election for stability makes zero sense when you already have a rock-solid majority of seats, and it’s just a cheap trick to extend his term and hold onto power.
Anyway, the divided conservative camp now has to make a tough call just to stay alive.
Experts think they need to either form a legit right-wing coalition like back in the 1940s, or at least cut a gentleman’s agreement not to split the vote, to stand a fighting chance against the NDP.
Let’s grab our popcorn and see if the fractured right wing can pull off a dramatic deal and unite in the time left before the election
