Caroline Elliott, who narrowly came in second in the recent BC Conservative leadership race, just locked down the nomination for West Vancouver-Capilano, which is an absolute conservative stronghold.
2. 원래 이 자리 꿰차고 있던 린 블록(Lynne Block) 주의원(MLA)이 엘리엇한테 자리를 양보하고, 자기는 험지인 노스 밴쿠버-시무어 지역구로 넘어가서 현역 NDP(신민당) 의원이랑 맞짱 뜨기로 했거든.
MLA Lynne Block, who originally held this seat, stepped aside for Elliott, deciding to head to the tough North Vancouver-Seymour riding to go head-to-head with the NDP incumbent.
3. 엘리엇은 두 아이 엄마인데, 자기 동네에서 출마할 수 있게 흔쾌히 자리를 비켜준 블록한테 완전 무한 감사를 표하고 있지.
As a mom of two kids, Elliott is beyond grateful to Block for gladly stepping aside so she can run in her own backyard.
4. 사실 웨스트 밴쿠버는 우파 후보한테는 완전 꿀통 지역구야.
Truth is, West Vancouver is pretty much a total cakewalk for right-wing candidates.
5. 엘리엇은 케빈 팔콘 전 BC 연합당(BC United) 대표의 처제이기도 한데, 보수당으로 노선을 갈아탄 뒤 아주 매운맛 행보를 보이고 있어.
Elliott, former BC United boss Kevin Falcon’s sister-in-law, jumped ship to the BC Conservatives and has been playing absolute hardball ever since.
6. 보통 보수 우파하면 경제 살리기나 세금 깎는 얘기만 하잖아?
Usually, when people think of conservatives, they only ever talk about boosting the economy or cutting taxes, right?
7. 근데 엘리엇은 그걸로는 택도 없다고 선을 긋더라고.
But Elliott firmly drew the line, saying that just won't cut it.
8. 오히려 NDP 정부가 그동안 학교, 공직 사회, 법원 등에 심어놓은 좌파 이데올로기나 원주민 권리 정책 같은 문화 전쟁(Culture war) 분야에서 제대로 한판 붙어야 한다고 주장하고 있어.
Instead, she argues we gotta take on the culture war over the leftist ideology and Indigenous policies the NDP baked into schools, the civil service, and the courts.
9. 단순히 돈 문제만 들이밀 게 아니라 사상적인 뿌리부터 싹 다 뽑아 고쳐야 한다는 거지.
Instead of just pushing the money issue, we gotta rip out the ideological roots and overhaul the whole thing.
10. 새로 당대표가 된 론 도억슨(Lorne Doerkson)도 팍팍 밀어주고 있는데, 만약 이번 선거에서 보수당이 정권을 잡으면 엘리엇이 꽤나 입김 쎈 장관 자리에 앉을 각이야.
With the new leader Lorne Doerkson backing her, if the Conservatives take power this election, Elliott is pretty much set to land a heavyweight cabinet post.
11. 험지로 짐 싼 블록이 승리하기만 하면, 보수당이랑 엘리엇은 블록한테 평생 까방권 하나씩 줘야 할걸.
If Block actually pulls off a win after heading into that tough riding, the Conservatives and Elliott will owe her a permanent free pass for life.
