(National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, 캐나다 정부가 원주민 아동들을 강제로 기숙학교에 보내며 저지른 인권 유린을 반성하고 기리는 날)’ 행사가 열렸어.
They held an event for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at Queen’s Park in New West this Wednesday.
With the warm fall sunshine and food trucks, it could have easily passed for just another local festival at first glance.
But residential school survivor William Nelson reminded everyone that this day is definitely not a celebration.
He opened up about the past when they couldn't even speak their own language and faced horrific abuse at school

Other speakers broke down the trauma that gets passed down through generations.
The trauma they faced at school spilled over into their homes, totally wrecking relationships between parents and kids.
So they say when you look at someone, instead of judging them like “what’s their deal?”, we should ask “what did they go through?”
Around 350 people showed up for the event, and most were wearing orange shirts symbolizing the victimized kids.
They took part in a smudging ceremony, burning sage to cleanse negative energy, and chowed down on some Indigenous bannock.
I hope this isn’t just a one-day thing, but real reconciliation keeps going by being open to hearing painful history.
