A massive fire ripped through a New West apartment last Sunday, leaving twenty-four families with absolutely nothing overnight.
It’s such a heartbreaking situation for residents who lost their homes, with their future completely up in the air.
According to tenant rep Jason Hamelin, the damage is so bad that the top floor roof completely caved in.
Since it’s completely beyond repair, they have to rebuild the entire building from scratch for all twenty-four families, and they say it could take years.
A lot of seniors were living in this building, barely scraping by on meager pensions or really tight fixed incomes.
That tight-knit community with affordable rent just vanished in the blink of an eye.
On top of that, some have mobility issues and are totally lost finding a new place, and since the fire hit at an ungodly 3:45 AM, lots of families barely made it out with just their kids, leaving everything behind.
By the time firefighters got there, the top-floor balcony was already engulfed in flames, and as the fire spread inside, a bunch of units were completely wiped out.
Thankfully, all the residents made it out safely, but a few beloved cats are still missing, leaving their owners worried sick.
For now, the evacuated residents were moved to a nearby community center, and the BC government quickly stepped in with three days of hotels, food, and clothes.
The mayor stopped by and promised more help, but the catch is that this initial aid totally runs out in just a few days.
Once that initial support runs out, all twenty-four families have to fend for themselves, whether they find a new place or end up on the streets.
The tenant rep also felt pretty heavy-hearted, calling it just an absolute worst-case scenario.
I heard they set up a GoFundMe page to help these poor displaced residents, so hopefully they get some help somehow.
