With the BC election coming up, the provincial government decided to hand over 400 parcels of Crown land as part of First Nations reconciliation.
The catch is, leaked internal documents show that they want to drastically slash compensation for logging companies that held timber rights, just because they’re running out of budget.
The forestry sector is absolutely furious over the government sticking them with the bill, especially when they are already on the ropes.
COFI CEO Kim Haakstad vented that while she is all for First Nations reconciliation, why should we be stuck footing the bill?
Premier David Eby is defending the move, saying they gotta protect taxpayer dollars, while the Conservatives are totally ripping into him for stabbing the struggling forestry sector right in the back with shady backroom deals.
On top of that, legal experts pointed out that this is straight-up constructive taking, the kind of wild stuff you would only see in places like Indonesia or Papua New Guinea.
If the government pushes this through, they're gonna face a wave of lawsuits.
I know giving up the land is well-intentioned, but they didn't properly budget for compensation, and forcing the industry to take the hit is making them catch serious flak right now.
