3. 고래 연구 센터(Center for Whale Research, 생태계 보전을 위해 고래를 모니터링하는 연구 단체) 연구진들이 지난 10월 19일에 엄마 곁에 찰싹 붙어 헤엄치는 꼬물이 ‘J65’를 딱 발견했거든.
Researchers from the Center for Whale Research spotted the little calf J65 swimming glued right to his mom on October 19th.
4. 태어난 지 일주일도 안 된 수컷인데, 엄마 젖도 쫍쫍 잘 먹고 아주 건강하게 뽈뽈거리면서 돌아다닌다네.
He's a baby male under a week old, nursing like a champ from his mom, and swimming around looking super healthy.
5. 타레콰는 2010년이랑 2020년에도 수컷 새끼를 낳았고, 이번이 무려 여섯 번째 출산이야.
Tahlequah already had baby boys back in 2010 and 2020, and this is literally her sixth baby.
6. 다만 아기 고래들은 태어나서 첫 1년 동안 살아남을 확률이 반반밖에 안 될 정도로 혹독한 야생 생태계를 견뎌야 하니까 연구진들이 계속 매의 눈으로 지켜볼 예정이래.
Baby whales only have a fifty-fifty shot at surviving their first year in the brutal wild, so researchers will watch them like a hawk.
7. 이번에 J65가 합류하면서 이 남방참고래 무리의 전체 식구 수는 77마리로 늘어났어.
With baby J65 joining the crew, this southern resident orca pod’s headcount just bumped up to 77.
8. 이 녀석들은 치누크 연어(Chinook salmon, 연어류 중 가장 덩치가 크고 영양가가 높은 종)를 원픽 주식으로 삼고 있는데, 요새 먹이도 팍팍 줄어들고 환경 오염이나 선박 소음 때문에 스트레스가 이만저만이 아니라고 하네.
These guys basically live on Chinook salmon, but with food supplies dwindling fast lately, they are stressed out big time from all the pollution and boat noise.
9. 아무튼 그동안 맘고생 엄청 심했을 타레콰가 이제는 새끼랑 오랫동안 꽁냥거리며 바다를 누비고 다녔으면 좋겠다.
Anyway, after going through so much heartbreak, I hope Tahlequah gets to roam the ocean and bond with her little one for years.
10. 험난한 바다 생활이겠지만, 귀여운 꼬마 고래 J65가 튼튼하게 무럭무럭 자라길 조용히 응원해야지.
