2. 지난 10월 17일에 게릭이라는 아저씨가 선거 자원봉사하다가 코목스랑 뷰트 스트리트 근처 덤불에서 비실비실한 스컹크를 발견했대.
Apparently, on October 17th, this guy named Garrick was volunteering for the election when he spotted a sickly skunk in the bushes near Comox and Bute.
3. 근데 이 스컹크가 폼이 좀 이상하더니 갑자기 벌떡 일어나서 아저씨한테 다가와 다리랑 신발을 앙 물어버린 거임.
But the skunk was acting really weird, and then it suddenly sprang right up, walked right up to the guy, and bit right into his leg and shoe.
4. ㄷㄷ 알고 보니 이 스컹크가 광견병에 걸려 있었던 거지.
Holy crap, it turned out that this skunk actually had rabies.
5. 천만다행인 건 이 아저씨가 박쥐 연구도 하던 자연주의자라서 이미 광견병 예방주사 풀스택을 찍어둔 상태였다는 거.
Thank God, the guy was a naturalist who studied bats on the side, so he'd already gotten the full rabies shot series.
6. 그래서 물리자마자 야생동물 보호단체에 신고해서 스컹크 잡을 때까지 현장 지키고, 바로 병원 가서 VCH (밴쿠버 연안 보건국) 지침대로 노출 후 예방접종까지 싹 마무리했대.
So right after getting bitten, he called up wildlife rescue, stayed put until they caught the skunk, and rushed straight to the hospital to wrap up his post-exposure shots following the VCH guidelines.
7. 문제는 이 스컹크가 며칠 동안 동네를 배회하면서 다른 사람들도 물었을 가능성이 크다는 거임.
Here's the thing, though: that skunk was roaming the neighborhood for days, so chances are it bit other people too.
8. 보건당국 피셜로 이미 몇 명 더 물려서 치료받고 있다고 하더라.
According to local health officials, a few more people have already been bitten and are currently getting treated.
9. 광견병이 캐나다에선 엄청 희귀한 병이긴 한데, 일단 걸리면 치사율이 저세상 급이라 물린 즉시 면역글로불린 (항체 주사) 맞고 치료를 해야 살 수 있어.
Rabies is super rare in Canada, but once you get it, it is basically a death sentence, so you gotta get antibody shots right after getting bitten to survive.
10. 그래서 지금 밴쿠버 시내나 웨스트엔드, 스탠리 파크 쪽에서 9월 22일부터 10월 17일 사이에 이상한 스컹크랑 접촉했거나 긁힌 사람, 댕댕이나 냥이들 있으면 무조건 빨리 병원 응급실로 튀어가야 함.
So if you or your furry friends came into contact with a sketchy skunk around Downtown, the West End, or Stanley Park between September 22nd and October 17th, you gotta haul ass to the ER ASAP.
11. 진짜 장난 아니니까 혹시라도 길에서 스컹크 마주치면 절대 만지지 말고 피해 다녀라.
This is seriously no joke, so if you run into a skunk outside, don't touch it and steer completely clear.
