1. 오늘 드디어 캐나다 브리티시컬럼비아주(BC주) 선거일이야.
Today is finally election day here in British Columbia, Canada.
2. 아침 8시부터 저녁 8시까지 투표소 문 활짝 열려있으니까 다들 투표하러 가야지?
The polls are open from 8 to 8, so we’ve all gotta go vote, right?
3. 이번 선거의 핵심은 과연 현 집권당인 신민주당(NDP)이 계속 짱먹을 것인가, 아니면 새로운 파티가 운전대를 잡을 것인가야.
This election really boils down to whether the ruling NDP stays in power or a new party takes the wheel
4. 저녁 8시에 투표 끝나면 BC주 전역의 93개 선거구에서 폼 미친 결과들이 슬슬 쏟아져 나오기 시작할 거야.
Once the polls close at 8 PM, wild results are gonna start rolling in from all 93 ridings across BC.
5. 근데 이번 개표 방식 완전 킹받는 포인트가 하나 있어.
But there’s one totally infuriating catch about how they’re counting votes this time
6. 2년 전엔 BC주 선거관리위원회(Elections B.C.)가 처음으로 전자 개표기 써보고 꿀 빨았거든?
Two years ago, Elections BC had it so easy using electronic tabulators for the first time.
7. 근데 올해는 갑자기 조기 선거(스냅 선거)로 진행되는 바람에 기계 세팅할 시간이 없었다는 거야.
But since this year was a sudden snap election, there was no time to set up the machines.
8. 물론 10월 16일부터 6일 동안 진행된 사전 투표에서 나온 89만 표 정도는 기계가 이미 다 까놔서 저녁 8시 땡치면 바로 결과 나올 예정이긴 해.
Of course, machines have already tallied up the roughly 890,000 advance votes from the six-day stretch starting October 16th, so the results drop right at 8 p.m.
9. 하지만 오늘 당일 투표소에서 던진 종이 투표용지들은 전부 수개표, 즉 사람이 일일이 손으로 까서 세야 한다는 사실.
The catch is that all the paper ballots cast at polling stations today have to be hand-counted one by one
10. 투표하는 사람 입장에선 종이 쪼가리 똑같이 생겼으니 알 빠 아니지만, 개표 결과 나오는 속도는 속 터질 수도 있어.
To voters, the paper ballots look identical, so they honestly couldn’t care less, but the speed of the results might totally drive you crazy.
11. 참고로 이번 사전 투표율은 전체 유권자의 24% 정도였어.
Just so you know, advance voter turnout was around 24 percent of all eligible voters.
12. 2024년 28%보단 살짝 폼 떨어지긴 했는데, 그래도 오늘 본투표에서 얼마나 화력을 보여줄지가 관건이지.
It took a slight dip from 2024’s 28%, but it all comes down to how hard people show up to vote today.
