After getting completely crushed in the last election, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and his ABC party said their goodbyes at the final council meeting.
2. 평소 같았으면 “의원님” 하면서 각 잡고 불렀을 텐데, 이번엔 다들 이름으로 친근하게 부르면서 나름 훈훈하게 마무리하더라고.
Usually they would’ve been super formal calling each other “Councillor,” but this time everybody went by first names and wrapped things up on a warm note.
3. 사실 4년 전 압승했을 때만 해도 당을 넘나들며 사이좋게 지내자더니, 임기 절반쯤 지나니까 타 정당 의원들 직책이랑 월급을 뺏어가면서 분위기가 완전 싸해졌거든.
After winning in a landslide four years ago, they talked about playing nice across party lines, but halfway through their term, they stripped rivals of their roles and pay, and the vibe got totally frosty.
4. 심지어 당 내부에서도 시장의 급발진 정책들 때문에 줄퇴사가 이어지고 고소전까지 벌어졌어.
Even inside his own party, the mayor’s knee-jerk policies triggered a wave of resignations and straight-up lawsuits.
5. 근데 막상 떠날 때가 되니까 앙숙이던 라이벌 의원이랑 포옹도 하고 명언까지 인용하면서 “최고의 시간이자 때로는 최고가 아닌 시간이었다”고 웃어넘기더라.
But when it came time to leave, he actually hugged his bitter rival, dropped a quote and laughed it off, saying it was the best of times, and sometimes not the best.
6. 켄 심 시장은 선거 운동 방식에 후회는 없다고 쿨하게 말했지만, 같은 당 소속이면서 낙선한 세라 의원은 뼈 때리는 팩트폭격을 날렸어.
Ken Sim played it cool, saying he had no regrets about his campaign, but his defeated party-mate Sarah dropped some brutal truth bombs.
7. 지난 선거 땐 긍정적인 바이브로 이겼는데, 이번엔 캠페인이 너무 어둡고 부정적이어서 졌다는 거지.
We won the last election on positive vibes, but this time around the campaign was way too dark and negative, so we lost.
8. 반면에 이번에 당선된 신임 시장 피트 프라이(Pete Fry)가 이끄는 녹색당은 완전 발랄하고 긍정적인 캠페인으로 승리했어.
On the flip side, the Green Party led by newly elected mayor Pete Fry won big with a super upbeat, positive campaign.
9. 새 시장은 앞으로 타 정당 의원들도 두루두루 기용하면서 협치(서로 뜻을 합쳐 정치함)를 해보겠다네.
The new mayor is gonna reach across the aisle, bringing in people from other parties to work together moving forward.
10. 말도 많고 탈도 많았던 켄 심의 시대가 가고, 다음 주부터 새 시의회가 공식 출범하는데 앞으로 어떻게 흘러갈지 완전 팝콘 각이야.
With Ken Sim’s drama-filled era finally behind us, the new city council takes over next week, and I’ve got my popcorn ready to see how this all plays out.
